One of Frank Gehry’s few skyscrapers, 8 Spruce Street formerly known as Beekman Tower is a striking addition to the New York skyline. The skyscraper's structural frame is made of reinforced concrete, and form-wise it falls within the architectural style of Deconstructivism along with Aqua, a skyscraper in Chicago begun after but completed before 8 Spruce. A project that got away was the trellis I. I look for ways to express feeling in a building without using historic decoration. Above that and grade-level retail, the tower contains only residential rental units. At 8 Spruce, we’re using Bernini’s folds to inspire the faade. It contains a public elementary school owned by the Department of Education.
